Medals of Honor Remembered

Three soldiers from St. Mary’s County, Maryland were awarded the Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor. Two were members of the United States Colored Troops.

The Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions has planned a ceremony to honor the three men at this year’s Juneteenth celebration June 16, 2012 in Lexington Park, Maryland.

The men were identified during research associated with the Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions’ determination to erect a monument to the United States Colored Troops at John G. Lancaster Park on Willows Road in Lexington Park, Maryland.

Groundbreaking for the United States Colored Troops Memorial Monument is scheduled for Sunday March 4, 2012 at 2 p.m,. at the park located at 21550 Willows Road in Lexington Park.
